1. Situation
At the time there was no consistent approach to Contractor Safety Management across the client’s organization. On site, people were burdened with extensive contracting administration, rather than focusing on safety leadership of contractors. How contractors were treated was not always aligned with the client’s values, contractors did not always feel respected and felt that it was unsafe for them to speak up.
Our approach:
We created a global delivery team with expertise from multiple safety domains who delivered a multi-year programme, working hand-in-hand with the client across risk domains of Safety, Health, Environment, Social Performance, Procurement, Legal, and Supply Chain. The work spanned corporate, multiple business units and locations around the world.

Globally consistent, scalable process: risk focused digitally enabled, and practical and pragmatic for site-level operations. Nine tools were created, calibrated and rolled out with training to cover the entire Contractor Management lifecycle.
Significantly improving supplier-client relations covering the platinum, copper, iron ore, diamonds and nickel businesses. We organised summits in South Africa, Peru, Chile and Brazil which were all built around the principles of psychological safety. Pre-summit engagements and surveys were run to ensure contractors had a voice throughout the process.
